Snippetty specialises in hair cuts for kids and it is fantastic. The store is fitted out with lots of things to make little people feel at home, including toys, things to touch, a giant fish tank and also a secured play area. The hairdressers are really friendly and work around the kids wonderfully, happy to cut their hair on their schedule and accommodate them. After the hair cut was done, Hugo even had his hair jooshed with product!

The fact that we went out for dinner might not seem all that interesting, except it was the first time that we, as a family of four, have gone out for dinner since Evie was born in May. Hugo was on his absolute best behaviour, ate more food than I think I’ve ever seen him eat for dinner and helped put our empty glasses onto one of the waiters trays, which was followed up by a couple of high fives. Evie was happy resting in the pram for the first half and hour and was a little grizzly midway through but then had a power nap, which was great.

I remember when Claire and I took Hugo out for our first dinner after his birth, we were really nervous and weren’t sure how it’d turn out. It wasn’t a train smash by anyones standard but with a little more practice, it became easier. Of course, with two children I figured that’d be a completely different beast, however on this occasion it was a screaming success – metaphorically speaking.

Now we just need to find the next place we’re going to grab an early dinner at!

It didn’t matter what we were doing, Hugo was determined he was going to make a statement – whether it was about going in the car, attending swimming lessons on a Saturday morning, picking up some groceries or going to the shops – there was bound to be an outburst.

In the last four to six weeks, that sort of behaviour has now stopped and in general terms our happy, easy going & tolerant son has returned from the post natal haze. That doesn’t mean that Hugo doesn’t throw a wobbly, he does – every toddler will but they are no where as frequent or severe which is great.

We’re now getting to a point where Hugo is genuinely interested in Evie. If Evie is on the her play mat for tummy time, Hugo will often come over and play beside her. If she is laying on the sofa for a few minutes, he will pop over and give her a kiss, poke her or lift up her shirt and say “belly button!”.

I think in the future, Hugo is going to make a great big brother.

It is a strange feeling in a way, sometimes I think to myself it feels as though it was only yesterday that Claire and I were in at Pindara Private Hospital for the birth and other times, it seems as though it is nearly a distant memory already. Putting a little thought behind why that might be, I think the latter is because we’ve done it before – there isn’t that first time parent panic or uneasiness with everything you do.

During the last six weeks since Evie was 2 weeks old, a lot has happened as you can imagine. Probably the most significant departure from our ‘plan’ is that while Claire had every intention to breast feed Evie for the forseeable future – her body just didn’t want to play ball. Claire battled through a few bouts of mastitis and after the last one we decided to call it a day. While I understand why it’s disappointing for women & mothers, however it can actually be a good thing in the long run as now the men can lend a hand. I love feeding Evie and it lets me get close to her, in a similar way as breast feeding does for a mum – so I think that is great. The other obvious advantage is that we can share the load and it takes a whole lot of pressure off of Claire – she can leave the house without the kids now and that isn’t actually an issue – though I wish that’d happen more often than it does.

When Hugo was born, Claire and I thought ourselves very lucky because it didn’t take long before we had Hugo in a little routine that worked well for him. Before we knew it, I was waking him up for a dream feed, putting him back to bed and we wouldn’t hear a peep out of him until around 7AM. We figured with such an excellent run with Hugo, what’d be the chances that we’d have that sort of fortune with Evie – well it turns out very likely. By about the 4 week marker, we began moving the feeds around to match the schedule in Save Our Sleep that we used with Hugo and badda-bing badda-boom, happy baby that sleeps through the night! There are a bunch of different baby books around and after seeing what can be accomplished by following a schedule, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough to a new parent – you’d be punishing yourself for no reason by not reading one.

Initially, he was just laying on it with his chest, which followed by him trying to lift a knee onto it in a climbing action.

Claire & I jumped on that behaviour as soon as he started it, however it hasn’t stopped it completely and Hugo will test the water again every so often.

While Claire & I were at the other end of the house recently, we returned to the kitchen to see Hugo laying or more precisely, lounging on top of the coffee table watching one of his favourite TV shows.

Hugo doesn’t watch a great deal of TV, however there are a few shows that he absolutely adores. I’m not sure what it is about any one given show at a time that captures his attention, but he clearly goes through phrases.

It started at about 10:30AM with Evie and her mid-morning feed. She didn’t seem that interested in it, which was odd as she normally guzzles it down, when she unleashed a nappy buster that the designers for Huggies clearly hadn’t accounted for. I don’t know where Evie was storing it all, but with so much volume, it leaked out everywhere – all over Evie, Claire & the sofa!

While we were cleaning up that mess, Hugo was picking up a little cane chair, moving it around the room and playing on it – which he has done countless times before. Unfortunately this time, while standing on the little chair, he overbalanced and banged his head into the side of the cot. I initially thought he might have just given himself a big fright, as there wasn’t any crying immediately afterwards – as it turns out, he was just drawing his breath in! In the second or two before I picked him up, the tears and blood were flowing. The by product, a nice line bruise above his right eye and a big, fat lip.

Within about two or three minutes of me soaking up the bulk of the blood with a tea towel and Hugo sucking on a nice cold, wet washer – he was calm again. This is the second time this year that Hugo has drawn blood and has managed to calm himself down quite quickly. It surprised me last time it happened and I thought he was as tough as old boots, but seeing it happen a second time as confirmed it.

I’m sure it won’t be the last time he’ll do it either!

Evie has been with us now for about a fortnight and what an amazing ride it has been already.

Claire and I thought it was incredible when Hugo was born and it turns out that the miracle of birth isn’t lost the second time around either. It still absolutely amazes me how a baby can go from being inside the womb for the better part of a year, not breathing and being completely dependent on the mother and seconds after birth is crying as their lungs take on oxygen for the first time.

In my mind, I was expecting it to be really difficult when we got home with Evie with regard to the two kids getting enough rest. As it turns out, so far it appears as though Evie can sleep through a bomb going off or in other more practical terms – Hugo playing and going bonkers within close proximity of her. Claire and I are of course, really glad she has a tolerance for noise and Hugo doesn’t seem worried about the noise Evie makes throughout the course of the day and night either.

Looking after two little people has been a challenge, as we’re still trying to get the scheduling sorted out so we can be a little more organised. The difficult times are breakfast (~7AM) and dinner (~5PM) for the moment, as they collide directly with breakfast and dinner for Hugo as well. Once we’re a little more practiced, Claire and I might be able to get out of the house before 10:30AM – imagine making an appointment on time!

While Claire and Evie were still in Pindara Private Hospital, Evie dropped some weight directly after birth. The doctors allow or expect up to 10% of the birth weight to be lost and Evie dropped less than that, which we were happy about. Thursday was our first visit to the community health clinic to get Evie weighed and she was put on a fantastic amount of weight in the last fortnight, over 600gm!

Evie has been a very good baby thus far, she is feeding, sleeping and making a mess as we’d expect. We’ve been really amazed by how strong her neck is already, it seems as though she is so much stronger than Hugo was at this age but it could just as easily be that we can’t remember quite clearly enough when Hugo was only a couple weeks old!

Yesterday we popped down to the medical centre at Helensvale to get the 18 month immunisation injections for Hugo.

Claire and I were incredibly impressed with Hugo, the nurse gave him his injection and he didn’t even bat an eye lid – no tears, no thrashing around, just a beautifully well behaved brave boy. In fact, he was more interested in the tiny bandaid the nurse wanted to put on the injection point, than the fact he’d just had an injection.

While we were there, Hugo was also officially measured again which we haven’t had done for quite sometime:

At just under 15Kg and 93cm tall, he is on the 97th percentile for weight and doesn’t register on the chart for height.

Claire and I became parents for the second time on Tuesday 18th May at approximately 11:40AM, when we welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world named Evie Charlotte Lattimore.

Evie weighed in at 3.6Kg or 7 lb 15oz in the old scale and was 49cm long. According to the Queensland Health growth charts, she is right on the average for length and between 50th and 75th percentile for weight.

Claire and Evie are both doing really well and we’re overjoyed to have a little girl in the family.
